Why is my nail tech doing a dry manicure?

Many people often ask why we are not soaking their nails for manicures. When performing a gel polish manicure of a hard mani or even a set of Gel Extensions, it is best to do so dry. This method can lead to stronger nails and cleaner cuticles, and better product adhesion.

When we soak nails in water and apply oils and cuticle remover, all this tends to expand our natural nails, and after we apply a product like gel polish, it will not be accurate in the shape of your nail. Your nail plate naturally curves in a ‘C’ shape. However, once submerged under water, the ‘C’ curl becomes smaller. Annoyingly, the natural nail plate is often not completely dry by the time that the polish has started being applied. So, once the nail plate is fully dry, the polish doesn’t lie completely flat on the surface and can begin to peel away

from the nail. In addition, the prep to get the product on is much harsher because we have to go in and dehydrate the nail plate for adhesion. In doing so, we decrease the durability of our gel polish manicure. If you're finding your hands need some TLC, ask your technician to do a sugar scrub and lotion treatment after your polish is complete!
